The rapids north of Desolation Sound require respect.
Today’s route led us through Yuculta Rapids, Gillard Pass, and Dent Rapids. We
had two choices of time, one about 11:00 in the morning and the other about
5:00 in the evening. We opted for the morning exchange.
In order to make it to the rapids in time we had to depart
Prideux Haven about 5:30 a.m. Everyone made it out on time, and thanks to less
opposing current than expected we arrived at the rapids early. I shut down the
engine for half an hour and drifted, enjoying the brilliantly sunny and calm
morning.

We transited Yuculta and Gillard a bit early, with a couple knot
current against us. No problem. We arrived at Dent (the most hazardous of the
rapids) at 10:38, three minutes before slack. One of the boats called on the
VHF and wondered where the rapids were.

What rapids? |
The rest of the day was uneventful. Calm water, beautiful
scenery, and easy cruising. We arrived at Blind Channel around noon and got
settled in. Many of us walked up to the giant, 800-year-old cedar tree.
Ocean Alexandra’s hose
leak was fixed by 10:00 a.m. and they went through the afternoon slack. By 6:00
p.m. they were secure at Blind Channel and the group was all together again.
